Ac/dc, Inxs, and Savage Garden. Natalie Imbruglia, Kylie Minogue, Neighbours, Home and Away.

Up to a few years back, these would have been how far the Australian culture scene had spread. But then we had Wolfmother and Empire of the Sun. Now, I know that is not much, but still, it was something. In the past few weeks, The Middle East start creating a buzz, with their show at Sxsw.

Tame Impala are another Australisn band trying to fly the colours for good Australisn music. Hailing from Perth, they ply the same kind of psych-rock that made Mgmt a household name. But Tame Impala have been doing their thing for much longer than Mgmt.

Since 2007, Kevin Parker, Dominic Simper, Jay Watson, and Nick Allbrook have been plying their trade under the Tame Impala moniker, though were together in one form or anyother for a few years before that. It is unsurprising to hear that they have toured with Mgmt in the past. They have also played with Yeasayer and The Black Keys, meaning their cool rating is sky high at the moment.

They have just released their first album, ‘Innerspeaker’ which does for lo-fi Australian psychadelic-rock what MIA does to subtlety: punches it right out of the water. Innerspeaker is a ferocious beast that Tame Impala control with aplomb.

Covered in a sheen of fuzz, ‘Lucidity’ is baffling in how it is so catchy. It revolves around a hook so good that Arctic Monkeys could have had it on their first album. But Tame Impala turn the tone as unfriendly as possible. The ears strain for the hook. Once it is found though, it is there to stay. It could be massive.

How do Tame Impala describe their music? “Tame Impala make psychedelic hypno-groove melodic rock music. It’s intended for moving one’s body to, and it’s intended for keeping still and observing other forms of movement. It’s bombastic but it’s swirling, think of the shoulder bones of a giant striding feline creature through some kind of tunnel. If Tame Impala’s music reminds you of what you’d want to put on when you next visit your mind’s engine room then they’re happy. If not, whatever, it’s just music. Put it on when the sun next shines. Basically it’s all about the feeling.”

It is hard to argue with them.
