New Arctic Monkeys! And it’s not ‘Brick By Brick’, the worst song they have ever written. ‘Don’t Sit Down…’ is much better and could fit seamlessly into Humbug, but as it is, it will slot into the band’s fourth album, Suck It And See, out June 3 over in Ireland. Before we discuss the new track, some thoughts are due on the first taster from the album and why it didn’t feature on this here blog.

‘Brick By Brick’ sounds like a joke, no two ways about it. From a fan following from (a few months before) the beginning, it would have struggled against any of the early demos. There’s no heart to the track, no thinking behind the lyrics and so little to care about. With previous AM tracks, you might be inclined to listen again and again for a line that only Alex Turner could come up with. Remember the first time you heard ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor’? I do. And I remember not being able to wrap my head around the fact he was singing “Dancing to electropop like a robot from 1984”. I listened to that song so much just to try and figure out how he managed to sing the line. But ‘Brick By Brick’? There is nothing worth a repeat listen.

In last week’s issue of NME, in a relatively short feature on Arctic Monkeys, Alex said: “Putting [‘Brick By Brick’] out first was us, for once, not trying not to be contrary. Like, us playing ‘Red Right Hand’ first at Reading is definitely us being contrary, but ‘Brick By Brick’ just felt like the right thing to do. It’s just fun and everyone we played it to really liked it so we just thought, ‘Fuck it.’ And it’s like new ground for us, we’ve not sort of had a tune like that before.” And there you have it. The justification for ‘Brick By Brick’ is that they haven’t done something like that before. It just doesn’t make sense that they would want to put something out there that is so far removed from what made people love them in the first place. But then, that’s Arctic Monkeys.

Arctic Monkeys – ‘Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair’

‘Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair’ is so much better in comparison (maybe that’s what they wanted). If the 150,000+ listens the track has garnered on Soundcloud in less than two days is any indication, then people still love them some Arctic Monkeys. Gone is Alex’s shouty vocals that appear throughout the group’s first three albums. Instead he does a restrained tread through the lyrics. And then the track comes to life, with ‘oooos’ and ‘yeah yeah yeahs’ while underneath, a guitar assault comes to life. The band still haven’t shaken their Queens Of The Stone Age and Josh Homme obsession and look like they never will. But when you love Qotsa….

‘Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair’ is out on 7″ this Saturday for Record Store Day. Digital singes and more will arrive in the weeks after.
