Shins frontman James Mercer doesn’t strike me as having the greatest sense of humour in the world – he sacked his entire band before they set about recording forthcoming album Port Of Morrow. ‘Simple Song’ is the first single off the album and gets a hilarious video to accompany it.. I wasn’t expecting that. It was directed by Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan. I won’t spoil it for you but it features a race to find a piece of paper followed by a rush to find the exit. The song itself is quite brash, again not something that I’d associate with the Shins, but their last album, Wincing The Night Away, is almost five years old at this stage so I guess a change in sound was to have been expected. Given the five-year gap, I wonder will Mercer’s lyrics still find an audience at a time when Skrillex is a thing – think it’s safe to say no Shins track has a drop in them. It’s going to be an interesting year for the Shins – and perhaps not as simple a one as the song. The b-side to ‘Simple Song’ is ‘September’, a more gentle, country-tinged track. Listen below.
