It’s been a while since we heard from Overhead, The Albatross, a Dublin-based instrumental six-piece. The last new material we heard from the group, which is still in its relative infancy, was the Mr Dog single last August, made up of two tracks with twists and turns around every corner. ‘Think, Thank, Thunk’ does not deviate from that road. It’s nine minutes of intricate guitar playing mixed with blasts of energy. But just when you think you know what’s coming next, Overhead, The Albatross take a detour. After hushed beginnings (are my speakers down too low?), a jam takes over and we’re into the math-rock sensibilities that Overhead have written on the back of their hands. Then, there’s shots of violin, before the tempo raises. And that’s all within the first 10 minutes. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the next seven. You’re on your own with that. ‘Think, Thank, Thunk’ – it’s the past, present and very exciting future of Overhead, The Albatross. The track can be downloaded for €1 or more from Bandcamp, with all proceeds going to the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.
