Daaaamn, Monto went away and got himself some heavy beats and some absolute tunes. He’s had a steady stream of tracks incoming on Soundcloud for the last year or so and he seems to have really stepped it up for the Best Boy EP, released via the impressive Melted Music label. I guess the leap in quality was down to his coming out on top of a competition in May to win €5,000-worth of music equipment. If I knew the quality that was lying in wait I would have raised the funds for him myself. The EP’s opening track is called ‘Homage’, an apt title. It comes close to the old style hip hop beats that label mate Sert One has become expert at. It’s a slow-burning introduction to the excitement that follows. ‘FTW’ is massive, building on percussion with a class, funky bassline. The star of the show is the seven-minute ‘Pot Luck’. Just listen to it and try not to be floored by the Waterford-based Wicklow producer (real name Ross O’Sullivan). We close with some more hip hop beats. Download the EP and buy it on CD here for a small fee – totally worth it.
