Bouts are one of a handful of Irish bands playing this year’s CMJ showcase in New York. They flew over to New York yesterday. I asked them to keep a diary of their week. Here’s the first entry.

Getting asked to play CMJ came completely out of the blue for us. We applied through Sonicbids like everybody else and thought no more of it. The trip to NYC has also coincided with our first-year anniversary as a fully formed entity. It’s a great way to mark a milestone and have a sort of impromptu holiday. B

ut our plan is also as work-focused as we can make it. We’ve lined up five gigs for our eight days here. As well as the two official Music From Ireland CMJ showcases we’ve three others. Lots of emailing, lots of asking. The Irish conttigent this year is really strong with So Cow, Squarehead, Lisa O’Neill and the Lost Brothers. We’re hoping to get the experience of connecting with a totally new audience, playing in a new city and road-testing a few new songs. As for the marathon of CMJ, between us we’re hoping to catch the Walkmen, Bear Hands, Postelles, Shark and obviously all the Irish acts!
