Following the release of a new track on Monday, today brings the premiere of the new Girl Band EP. The Dublin band have only released a single to date – the excellent In My Head – but if you’ve seen them live over the last year you’ll notice a couple of tracks on France 98. Recorded at Bowlane Studios in Dublin, the EP is six tracks that recall the early 90s. I compared ‘You’re A Dog’ on Monday to a pissed-off Nirvana of the later years playing their early stuff. The following five tracks stick to a similar template. ‘Busy At Maths’ is a percussion-heavy live favourite while ‘That Snake Conor Cusack’ is full of the bile that would sound right at home with grunge bands. “I finished in last,” Dara spits with an apathetic shrug. The title track of the EP is over in just 77 seconds, leading into the excellent, bass-reliant double finale of ‘Handswaps’ and ‘Second One’. The last track in particular is probably the best thing I’ve heard from Girl Band to date, as they play around with that bass riff while the guitars reel around in their own world. And that voice… (More about how to order France 98 and tour dates after the jump.)

So yeah, I like the EP and I think you will, too. Girl Band are releasing France 98 on Any Other City, with a limited run of 300 12″ records, which will all be numbered, hand stamped and wrapped in string (exactly like the single In My Head) It will also be available for free download on their Bandcamp page from November 9 – you can pre-order the record there now. The record will be available in all the usual places: The Rage, Elastic Witch, and Tower Records in Dublin, Plugd in Cork, and Wingnut in Galway, Waterford and Athlone (newly opened). Girl Band are also playing a couple dates around Ireland next month in support of the EP. They’re absolutely brilliant live so you’d be a fool to miss them.
