Seriously, where do you start? We got a taste of what not to expect from Simon Bird with the video for ‘All The Houses On My Street Look Exactly The Same’ last week. The artwork for Sport is weird, as you can see. And the album seems to have come from nowhere – Bird mentioned it on Facebook once or twice but I didn’t know when it would actually arrive. And then late last night, a Sunday, he put Sport up on Bandcamp for a price of your choosing. Bird says: “Sport has always seemed kind of alien to me. I’ve never enjoyed watching or playing any kind of sport and I have struggled for my entire life to gain an understanding as to what it is about sport that so many people find captivating and entertaining. Therefore it seemed fittingly ironic for me to name this album, which I spent almost an entire year of life working on and poured hundreds of hours of work into, after something that is (at least in my mind) completely irrelevant and void of any substance or meaning. Fuck Sport.”

The album comprises seven tracks, the shortest of which is four-and-a-half minutes, while two exceed 10 minutes. The central tracks ‘She Poisoned Those Boys’ and ‘Collapse, Star Lung’ are the highlights on initial listens. The former slowly escalates, though it always feels almost suffocating, as if it can’t escape a small room. Not a comforting listen. ‘Collapse, Star Lung’ tows a similar line so be thankful for ‘Druggy’, eight minutes that offer you time to catch your breath. You can download Sport for however much you deem fit, though as Bird says, he poured a lot of time into its making so maybe give him a little bit in return.
