community games cover

What we have here is a taster of a 12-track, four-band album that’s due out early next month (the LPs ship out on April 5). Grand Pocket Orchestra, No Monster Club, Cave Ghosts and Ginnels are the bands playing the Community Games. I used to really dislike GPO but either I’ve mellowed towards them or they’ve gotten better – maybe a little from both sides – but their 103-second track seems like the best way to open proceedings. ‘No One’ is a surf-pop race to the finish, with wailing backing vocals taken straight from a Scooby Doo cartoon. Everything on No Monster Club’s ‘Freaking Me Out’, even the name, are pretty cartoonish. Both songs are pretty similar but it’s the next track, Cave Ghosts’ contribution, which is the highlight of this taster. ‘Hideaway’ continues the surf-pop idylls of what we’ve heard from Cave Ghosts to date as well as what The Community Games seems to be going for. This one is the most fun track of the four, the one I’ve returned to most. I tried to resist but I couldn’t. Ginnels’ ‘Rotting Meat’ finishes things off with some Real Estate vibes thrown in among the mouldy cups and, well, the rotting meat. Cup your ears and this taster could be the sound of just one band. I dunno if that’s a good or a bad thing – homogeneous, maybe? But I like what I’ve heard so far and hopefully the LP will show us the different shades of each band – and I can’t wait to hear the other three tracks from Cave Ghosts, the newest of the four acts on this collection and the only group not to have released an album.

The details: The Community Games is Popical Island’s first ever vinyl record. The record will be released on 100 limited edition 12” LPs on April 5. Ten collectable covers will be available, with each one featuring a mugshot of a different bandmember. All four bands will be performing at the album launch on Saturday, April 13, upstairs in Whelan’s. Admission is €5, or €10 with a copy of the LP (while stocks last).
