community games cover

We got a taster of The Community Games in March, with one track each from its contributors, Grand Pocket Orchestra, No Monster Club, Cave Ghosts and Ginnels. But this is the real deal, the full hog: three tracks each from the four bands, which, if my maths adds up, comes to 12 songs. It’s going to be released on record, Popical Island’s first 12″ vinyl release. It all clocks in at 33 minutes, and more than a few of the tracks sound like a race to the end, which is no surprise – GPO have been like that for years, they’re not changing now. Everybody’s going to have their favourite track and even their favourite band, although it’s not a competition (wait, maybe it is), but I think Cave Ghosts’ songs are the strongest in the collection. I actually go weak at the knees listening to ‘Hideaway’ – and that’s when I’m sitting down; I don’t know what I’ll be like if I get to hear it live. I might do a proper review of the album next week, around the time of the launch gig, details below, but here are my favourite tracks from the release by the other bands: Ginnels – ‘Penny Dreadful’, Grand Pocket Orchestra – ‘Vampyra’ (the best thing I’ve heard them do), and No Monster Club – ‘The Call Of The Wild’. But as I said, you probably have your own favourites. The Community Games is released on 100 limited edition 12” LPs. Ten collectable covers will be available, with each one featuring a mugshot of a different bandmember. All four bands will be performing at the album launch on Saturday, April 13, upstairs in Whelan’s. Admission is €5, or €10 with a copy of the LP (while stocks last). You can buy the album on Bandcamp now.
