sweet jelly roll cover

There’s a shoegazey, languid quality to ‘Sweet Jelly Roll’, the title track of the new 10″ single from Cork band the Altered Hours. Over the course of five-and-a-half minutes, Elaine’s vocals will lure you in, repeatedly assuring you that “it comes and then it goes”. Live, the Altered Hours come across as fans of Pixies, but on ‘Sweet Jelly Roll’, with its assured use of distortion and hints of keyboard, they sound like they’d be right at home in the mid-70s, surrounded by psych-rock bands. The track doesn’t rush itself, taking its time to wind around the room, to reveal itself – well, like a peacock unfurling its feathers, I guess. Recorded in autumn 2012 with Fabien Leseure in Berlin, the three-track record, backed with ‘Smoke Your Eyes’ and ‘Everyone Is Inside’, is out on Anton Newcombe’s Berlin-based A Records at the end of the month. The Altered Hours have a few gigs lined up after the single’s release, and you can see the dates below, after the jump.
