record store gay 2013

This is probably my favourite track from the second annual Record Store Gay release. Maybe it’s just because new Paddy Kelleher music doesn’t come around too often. Record Store Gay is an annual celebration of diversity and music, in aid of the Outhouse charity and in association with Elastic Witch for International Record Store Day, which is this Saturday. It sees Irish artists giving their take on cult classics, in this case Kelleher offering a version of Bronski Beat’s ‘Smalltown Boy’. It’s several shades of amazing. “You never cried to them, just to your soul,” Kelleher sings. I wanted to hug Kelleher after I heard this for the first time. Other tracks I really enjoyed on the compilation include French Bird’s ‘Got To Be Real’ (THAT BASS!!), Cave Ghosts’ take on Robyn’s ‘With Every Heartbeat’, and Little Xs For Eyes’ version of ‘Bette Davis Eyes’, originally by Kim Carnes. You can stream the whole Record Store Gay album over at Nialler9, who has all the info about the gig on Saturday.
