If you’ve been to De Barra’s in Clonakilty, West Cork, then you don’t need me to tell you just how special the pub (best Murphys in Cork) and folk club are. If you haven’t been, you’re really missing out on a vital piece of Irish music heritage. Noel Redding is perhaps its most famous son, but the likes of Roy Harper and Christy Moore are also frequent visitors. Next month, De Barra’s is celebrating 30 years of music (it’s been going 50 years) with a series of special gigs, which will see the likes of the West Cork Ukulele Orchestra, a house party, Fred and the aforementioned Roy Harper performing. All of the special gigs are below. Other noteworthy gigs at the venue in August include the Vincents and Tradiohead (you can imagine what this is). You can see all of De Barra’s gig listings for August here. If you still haven’t decided where to staycation this summer, go to Clonakilty and De Barra’s. You won’t regret it. I’ll have more on the 30th birthday celebrations soon so stay tuned. (Pic above is West Cork Ukulele Orchestra, taken by Brid O’Donovan)
