Villagers returned to the Savoy in Cork on Monday night, as they draw the curtain on a stellar year, beginning with the release of second album {Awayland}. It’s no mean feat filling any Cork venue on a Monday night, but such is the draw of Conor et al that they not only do that, but it’s a hushed crowd too, one which watches starry eyed as Conor bares his emotions on old favourites like ‘Pieces’ as well as brand new ones such as the set closer tonight (‘Hot Scary Summer’?). There was also a cover of ‘Last Christmas’ which featured the unique refrain “fuck fuck fuck, fuckity fuck”. Jape was on support duty, playing 40ish minutes of all new material bar closer ‘The Oldest Mind’. I’m really excited by his next album, due in 2014. Villagers play Vicar Street tonight with the Stargaze orchestra and with Soak and I Have a Tribe supporting. It’s kind of a big deal. All pictures after the jump by Brid O’Donovan.
