I think it’s been a really good year for Cork music, from new releases to new bands, venues and more. On Saturday night at the Pavilion, Fred called it a day with a stunning show, drawing the curtain on 15 years of music. But the show must go on, and the following night, Sunday, December 29, four Cork bands took to the Pav stage to showcase the breadth of talent in the city. I’ve covered the Vincent(s), Shaker Hymn and Private Underground Residence throughout the year. The two former bands have a big year ahead, with new singles and albums in the works, while PUR finally released their debut album this year – I don’t know what plans they have in the works, if any, but I look forward to hearing whatever they get up to. The Careers, meanwhile, are still in their infancy – they’re doing their Leaving Certs in the first half of 2014 – but already have a solid debut EP under their collective belts, Atomic Cosmosaurus. They never fail to impress live either. So as we say goodbye to one legendary Cork band in Fred, it’s not the time to lament a musical malaise but rather celebrate a future that looks brighter than ever. Here’s to 2014!
