If, like me, you’re try to filter out all the talk/hype about SXSW – I mean, it jumped the shark with Lady Gaga this year, right? – maybe Couch By Couchwest might be your thing. It’s become a global event, too, not confined to Austin. “CXCW is an annual online music festival that is for everyone. No badges, lanyards, bracelets, parking fees, ticket lines, exclusive parties, VIP tents, portapotties, babysitters, dogsitters, expensive beer prices, or crappy hotel rooms… just the sweet comfort of your own couch. Here’s how it works, artists and bands from all over the globe record a video performance for us from their living rooms, kitchens, porches, bathrooms, you name it. Pretty much anywhere but a stage – and we post them during the week of the festival (March 9-15, 2014).” There’s an Irish side to CXCW, too, courtesy of Tony Fitz from Homebeat, who features in a video below. He recorded a number of acts, including Bantum, Sleep Thieves and Biggles Flys Again, in a big country house in Kildare where he says he also records out of. ” It’s a curious little event that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but I love the idea of it,” he says. “This year I wanted to go for a full band vibe, so we got a few of our friends from previous Homebeat events involved.” The YouTube playlist below features all the Irish acts recorded for CXCW, with some playing new songs. Emmet from Homebeat, who appears in the introductory video, says it’s a golden age of Irish creativity. After you’ve watched the eight videos, you’ll be hard-pressed to disagree. All the Irish videos are here on the CXCW site.
